G S Kelsey Ltd continued its association with North Lincolnshire Councils Community Champion Awards by sponsoring the event for the 4th year running. We sponsored the inaugural awards ceremony back in 2012 and our Director, Matthew Robinson, has attended the awards evening every year since to present awards to the winners and runners up.
This year we sponsored the “Community Project of the year Award”. This is awarded to an individual or group that volunteer their services to create and manage a community project that benefits the people of North Lincolnshire.
Unfortunately there could only be one winner and the Ashby Babes narrowly edged it from Gillian Vickers. Gillian, a retired Arts Development Officer works tirelessly throughout Scunthorpe and the Isle to help inspire young people. Using her performing arts background she has arranged and managed rural touring programmes to encourage young people to take up music, dance and arts.
This year’s winners, the Ashby Babes Café was created 18 months ago with the intention of providing a support group for women who breast feed. The group meet once a week at various establishments throughout North Lincolnshire. Last year’s runners up in the category, Café Independent are one of the venues that welcome and encourage the women to feed their babies in public. The group offer support to women from all backgrounds and ethnicity to help overcome some of the stigmas attached with breastfeeding in public.
The work of both nominees is very admirable and it proved to be an enjoyable evening listening to their stories. The entire night was a huge success and one that ought to continue to help celebrate the work of volunteers throughout the region.
